Titirangi Folk Music Club has been my musical home since 1975, when Des Rainey first introduced me to the club. At that time I had some South African and folk-revival cum contemporary songs under my belt. The club introduced me to the wider folk repertoire with happy results for me! I learned more songs (especially New Zealand songs), improved my guitar technique and felt the joy of the "aftermath" sing-a-rounds, with "no-hands-barred" harmonising. Rudy Sunde said something that stimulated me to start writing songs and some 80 songs later, I'm still writing. One day I'll get it right! Sue Milburn encouraged me to think of recording my songs and "Large as Life" is my third album, completed this year with Portable Panic: I plan to present some of the songs from the album on the 13th.
So what can you expect? I think I'm primarily a singer who plays some guitar and harmonica. I love the melodic and narrative songs as well as songs of observation and commentary. I aspire to that in my writing. I'm happy with some of the songs I've written but I enjoy singing a range of songs that I wish I had written. I love a singing audience, so there will certainly be some chorus songs along the way. Singing shanties and sea-songs with the Maritime Crew has added a salty edge to my repertoire, so there may be a sea song or two. It's likely that I'll persuade some of my musical whanau to help with some of the songs. I'm looking forward to a good evening playing to the warm Titirangi audience.
