One of the hottest bands on the Auckland acoustic music scene, Shotgun plays an exciting mix of Bluegrass, Old Time Country Music and a variety of acoustic music.
All four band members belong to the Auckland Bluegrass & Traditional Old Time Country Music Club. Keith, Cheryl and Alan formed Shotgun about 5 years ago having played on and off many years in other bands, with Bruce joining in 2009 to expand their playing repertoire. They play the type of music they all enjoy so much.
Their love of the music is obvious and the enjoyment they get from playing it is highly infectious. Individually they are all exceptionally talented musicians – together they are amazing. Their musical wizardry, their vocal harmonies and their extensive repertoire, together with their engaging on stage personalities, will keep you entertained all evening.
Early in 2011 NEIL COLQUHOUN launches a 2nd edition of his iconic kiwi songbook. Neil was closely associated with Titirangi Folk Club for many years in its early days and he would like to introduce his book through the club and give us the opportunity to purchase copies of the book before the main launch next year.
SONG OF A YOUNG COUNTRY is an illustrated New Zealand history in the words and music of songs. This is a totally revised and enlarged edition of a classic of NZ publishing; the 1972 edition has been out of print for decades. This is rich, poetic Kiwi cultural treasure — the songs of the pioneers: whalers, sealers, gumdiggers, goldminers, unionists, and other hard cases.
Neil Colquhoun enjoyed a long career as a music specialist educator in schools. Performance with Rona Bailey and Jim Delahunty at the 1957 Auckland Festival of the Arts began his interest in New Zealand folk song. Since then he has collected, performed and recorded New Zealand song, and where the music has been lost he has recreated appropriate and beautiful tunes.
