Robin Nelson comes from a long music heritage in that he has an ancestor who once beat a piece of wood with a old thigh bone, got together with a few other like minded individuals and formed the world’s first Neanderthal band, ‘Doh!’
Seriously, his seafaring grandfather would entertain with the concertina, his mother and grandmother trod the boards and a great uncle took on vaudeville. Being the eldest of four, he felt it was up to him to stick his head over the top and keep up the family tradition.
Robin is self taught on the guitar and only in the last few years has he taken to performing and writing his own work. His songs are simple, they are from the heart and they tell a story.
He tells us that a well known journal of high esteem once described him as: Clapped out old banger, knackered but still going strong. And that was in 1972! As he would have been little more than a teenager then we can take that story with a pinch of salt. It’s probably a more accurate description these days, but he can still sing a great song and keep an audience well entertained.
An evening with Robin Nelson is sure to leave a warm glow.
The evening begins with a Young Persons spot from Phoenix Hamilton. One of the highlights of our Young Persons Showcase back in August, we're really looking forward to seeing Phoenix back on the Titirangi stage.
An informal ‘Singaround’ - ‘Open Mic’ without a Mic - A smaller group of people meet to share their songs and music.
