English born John Hayday attended his first folk club in 1962, following which he was inspired to learn guitar and to sing. Later that year he and Cornish singer John Sleep formed the “Folk Cottage” which, over the years played host to most of the big names in the British folk scene.
He moved to NZ in 1966 and continued to expand his repertoire and experience, touring throughout the country and fronting for the Pentangle tour and also Tom Paxton & Mary Hopkins. He was a headline guest at the first Auckland Folk Festival in 1974 and again in 1998. The latter performance marked the beginning of a partnership with Vaughan Morgan, an ex student of John’s.
Vaughan is a gifted musician whose interests and ability spans many genres of the guitar from Classical through Rock, Folk to Heavy Metal. He is a sought after teacher and performer, playing with choirs and rock bands as well as at folk clubs with John.
The Captain Morgan band was formed in 1998 and at one time had 6 members. The current format is a duo featuring John and Vaughan. They look forward to visiting Titirangi again, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.
