• Festival Welcome Concert

  at Auckland Folk Festival Kumeu Showgrounds from Friday January 24^th – Monday 27^th 2014. Our 41^st Festival.

  The Auckland Folk Festival Welcome Concert takes place in The Mill at 8.00PM on Friday Jan 24^th.

  Featuring - not necessarily in this order:-

  • Jean Reid – No stranger to the folk community, Jean always delivers great Trad or Contemporary songs, with powerful messages or intriguing stories.
  • Alec Healy – Double Bass, Banjo; it doesn’t matter to Alec. They have strings for him to be let loose on. Alec is sure to keep you entertained with his own inimitable style.
  • Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard – Haunting harmonies, songs from the heart, pathos or humour; Mark and Brenda combine these with their deceptively laid back instrumentals leaving you wondering how they make it look so easy.
  • Paul Brown - A familiar face on the Auckland folk scene, Paul’s rich baritone sound delivers songs with lyrics equally as powerful as his voice. He sings with passion about things past and present that really matter.
  • Wai Tai - use the the call of the feminine voice, earthy percussion and delicate strings to fuse Traditional Maori songs and chants with international music. Wai Tai are Robyn Kamira, Te Auripo Kamira, Kirsten Taylor, Charles Royal and Eamon Nathan and are sure to bring that Pacific feel to the Welcome Concert.
  • Three Point Turn - might be a new name on the scene but don’t let that mislead you. Claire Robertson, Emily Roughton and Adam Ogle are all highly accomplished musicians; put them together with their harp, fiddle and guitar and these three young musicians are bound to rock the Mill.

The Club was conceived in 1965 when the Clancy Brothers didn't come and someone had the astounding idea of having a sing-a-round thus transforming an audience into a folk group. Formally established in 1966 we're still going strong.
