Celtic Ferret – Saturday 13th August 2022

Celtic Ferret

Celtic Ferret are relieved to be unlocked, loaded and primed to fire off some of the songs from their second album “A Few Miles Together”.

They will bring some with them because they are really quite proud of it and you can buy it for $20!

Celtic Ferret are Jean Reid and Ian Bartlett whose repertoire is steeped in the folk tradition.

They paint evocative musical pictures of gruesome deaths, riots, crimes, love and loss, customs and characters all woven with earthy harmonies and thoughtful instrumentation – and a touch of humour! If only history had been taught this way at school!

They have been guests at numerous festivals and clubs around New Zealand and are happy to be at TFMC at last.

Whet your appetite for the gig and the album with some snippets on the album launch page at:-

Fingal – Saturday 9th July 2022

Fingal:
Ken Kowalchuk, vocals, bass; Lisa Dohig, vocals;
Deb Harding, vocals; Mike Harding, vocals, guitar;

Lured by the bright lights of Titirangi Beach Hall and the offer of Jude Black’s hospitality Fingal are leaving their wild west coast hideaway and coming north. Like their namesake of Scottish legend Fingal, the band, have been seldom seen and rarely heard. Last reported sightings, though not recently, at Te Rangi and Patuha.

They met up soon after Ken and Lisa arrived in New Plymouth following a spell in Ohura (teaching, not incarcerating!). Young families and involvement in the local folk club and festivals saw friendship grow over much shared music and good times.

In New Plymouth Deb and Mike assembled a bush band to play for local fundraisers and family celebrations. Ken joined this combo on his modified mini-bass and Lisa joined Deb in songs between sets as ceilidh dancers took a rest. Mike provided solid rhythm and a fourth voice. Their repertoire expanded with regular Friday night food and music sessions exploring wider folk/rock fields.

Fingal; four friends who enjoy folk music and singing songs about people and places. Songs from the west of Ireland to outback Australia; from the English fairground to the Mississippi swamp.

Songs of intrigue and inspiration, solace and celebration.

Songs to inspire and bring an audience together in unison and harmony.

TFMC Zoom International – Saturday 30th July 2022

7:30 p.m. NZ time, 8:30 a.m. Brit time, 07:30 UTC.

While keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll be able to continue holding Guest Nights and Folk on Friday events for real in Titirangi, we don’t want to totally give up the pleasure we’ve had from those around the country and around the world zooming in to our Zoom nights, so we’re putting on a couple of those before the spring/autumn daylight saving changes, and one after they’ve changed back, so the Brits who join us don’t have to get up ludicrously early to do so.

The dates for your diary are as above, and also 24th September 2022, and 1st April 2023, all on Saturday, all at 7:30 p.m. NZ time, 8:30 a.m. Brit time, 07:30 UTC.

The Pipi Pickers – Saturday 11th June 2022

Banjo-licious Bluegrass

About The Pipi Pickers

The Pipis play a blend of contemporary and traditional hard driving bluegrass with solid instrumental chops and an engaging performance style that puts a smile on everyone’s face and infuses even the most dreadful of murder ballads with a sense of joy and energy. The Pipis bring a love of the genre and a desire to share that love with as many people as possible. Nat Torkington is New Zealand’s best 5-string Scruggs-style banjo player, and is ably supported by his father Barry on guitar, Garry Bigwood on mandolin, and wife Jenine Abarbanel on double bass and vocals.

The Pipis have become favourites at New Zealand and Australian music festivals through their vibrant performances, open and inclusive jam sessions, and slow jam workshops.

You can find out more about them on their website pipipickers.com or visit their Youtube channel to get a complete feel for their live performance. Do that and we’ll be sure to see you at the Titirangi Beach Hall on the 11th June for the real thing.

Beverley Young – Saturday 14th May 2022

Beverley Young (with Bodhran)

Beverley Young has put together a top-class set from her extensive repertoire  of songs to enthrall and entertain us tonight.

Her material will be  mostly from British and Irish traditions, with maybe a sprinkling of trad-style American country added, and a little from New Zealand for good measure. Expect tales of roguish behaviour, work and hardship and love and loss — traditional songs that prove nothing really changes through the years.

Beverley is a long time singer and lover of folk song. She honed her style at the Devonport folk club, has been a favourite performer at Titirangi folk club over the years, and has performed at venues all over the country. She reflects that she has had the good fortune to be able to share the stage along the way with her idols Martin Carthy and Andy Irvine, among others, at festivals and folk clubs around New Zealand, which Beverley regards as her biggest thrill.

She has recorded three albums, the first of which, Bushes And Briars, won the New Zealand Folk Album award.

Beverley will be joined by husband Al Young who will be playing back up on guitar and dobro and maybe a little banjo, and working hard for his money!

So it will be a cool and laid back night at Titirangi. Beverley is looking forward to singing for you, and to having the pleasure of your company. See you there!

Hanna & Harry – Saturday 9th April 2022

Note:- No Club Night in the Beach Hall tonight, instead we’ll be getting a live concert from Hanna & Harry live streamed
HERE – https://fb.me/e/1tuFYPYBG
or on the TFMC Facebook page!!!

Here is Hanna & Harry’s Facebook Page

Same time – 8:00PM start – different place.

Hanna & Harry

Pairing traditional tunes from Hanna Wiskari Griffith’s native Sweden with new tunes influenced by Harry Champion’s English & Celtic heritage, Hanna & Harry weave soprano sax and acoustic guitar through polska and reel – highlighting musical connections between Scandinavia and the British Isles and expanding on a conversation that likely started hundreds of years ago.

Hanna Wiskari Griffiths has toured NZ extensively with Habbadam (DEN/SWE) and Goodland Trio (SWE), and performs as one third of  Across The Great Divide (NZ). She is an Ockham Collective artist-in-residence, and coordinates the NZ branch of Ethno, a global network that encourages young people to explore and share their culture through music.

Harry Champion is a recovering pop muso, having worked as a session musician for Anika Moa, The Feelers, Tama Waipara, Ruby Frost, Zowie, and many others. He was brought up immersed in the Auckland folk scene and writes jigs while his children are trying to get to sleep.
