Cameron’s day job is making television documentary and current affairs, but after-hours has always been about making music – from trad folk to bluegrass and country.
He plays acoustic and lap steel guitars in a number of line-ups, including Chris Priestley’s ‘Unsung Heroes,’ ‘Martha and the Backseat Drivers’ and ‘Bluegrass & Beyond.’
For the past decade, he’s turned his hand to writing songs that draw on the heritage, heartache and hope of this country of ours.
Time to get together with fellow folkie Zoomers from near and far for another Friday Folk INTERNATIONAL Edition.

We’re a totally informal, small friendly group of people who like to sing and play music. This is a good place for experienced musicians to meet up and enjoy playing together.
If you do not sing or play and would like to then here you’ll find encouragement. There is never any pressure and you may wish to visit a few times to get confidence or you may already be confident, it does not matter, no one will criticise, only support.

This will be the first time we’ve put on a concert for some time, but we’ve got some great guests, and a great support act, to make it all worthwhile.
Aro are a husband and wife duo, made up of Charles (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Te Ata, Te Ati Awa) and Emily Looker (nee Rice). The pair met at Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau (University of Auckland), both studying for a Bachelor of Music (Pop), and discovered that they shared a passion for the power of language and music to tell stories, create community and remind us of our cultural identity.
Love defines this jazz-pop-RnB, husband & wife pair, and harmony is their signature.
Their first single Kōtare is a showcase of the distinctive sound that Aro has become known for; a warm blend of pop, R&B, jazz, and taonga pūoro. The track is a jubilant guitar driven melody, inspired by the kōtare (kingfisher). The gorgeously harmonious dual vocals carry the song, Emily’s honey-voiced jazz blending with Charles’ full throated haka sound, allowing the poetic te reo Māori lyrics to truly shine. Punctuated with percussive clicks and joyful whistles, Kōtare is an uplifting and beautiful example of the energy of the manu.

Members Aaron Gott and Amy Maynard offer up a sound rooted in country-style guitar and soaring harmonies woven together at their very fibre, intensified by their on-stage chemistry. The duo’s familiarity, closeness and authenticity is fuelled by their real-life romance, creating a magnetic performance style that captivates their audience time and time again, and has seen them open for the likes of Fly My Pretties, Herbs and Tiny Ruins, and as a featured act at the Canterbury Folk Festival.
Having performed together extensively since they bonded during a recording assignment at music school in 2012, Aaron and Amy embarked upon their newest musical endeavour Looking For Alaska two years ago, and have since worked tirelessly to create a collection of original material, ranging from thigh-slapping, foot-stomping folk sing-alongs, to poignant heart-rending ballads drenched in melancholy.
Looking For Alaska are currently gearing up for the release of their new album, ‘Light and Shadow,’ which is due for release on 6th November.
